Central High School Named a New York State Education Department Recognition School
On October 10, 2019 the board of education recognized Central High School Principal Dr. Joseph Pompilio and the Central teachers and staff for being named a New York State Education Department Recognition School under the Every Student Succeeds Act Plan.
According to the NYSED, “Recognition Schools are identified as such because they are among the top performing under ESSA for performance, student growth and/or graduation rate; met or exceeded either the school or state measures of interim progress for English language arts and mathematics, rate of Chronic Absenteeism, and College, Career, and Civic Readiness; and met the federally required 95 percent participation rate in the English language arts and mathematics assessments.”
Last school year, Central received distinction by the New York State Education Department for graduating young men of color at one of the highest rates in the state of New York.

All Eastern Musician
As you may already know, one of our North musicians had been selected to the All-Eastern Music Festival Band. Amelia Cossentino left early Friday morning for Pittsburgh where she worked and rehearsed with top HS musicians from the East Coast over the weekend.
Amelia contacted me late Friday afternoon, to say that she had been awarded first chair of the tuba section, which makes her the best HS tubaist from Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense School in Europe.
When she returns to school on Monday, if you see her in the hall or in class, congratulate her on this amazing accomplishment.

Central Teacher Honors Veterans

Central Social Studies teacher Chris Critchley photographed with the 2000+ flags that he installs each year on the front lawn of Central high school as a salute to Veterans. Each Veteran Day Chris leads Central in a celebration of those Veterans on staff, graduates, and even relatives of staff and students who served. Names of alumni, staff, and relatives are read each day by Chris during the morning announcements. Thanks Chris, we all appreciate what you do each year.

Hurricane Florence - How You Can Help
We have all watched with great sadness the suffering and loss inflicted on the Carolinas by Hurricane Florence. The storm dumped nearly three feet of rain on the region, killing more than three dozen people. Roughly 10,000 people remain in shelters.
One way you and your colleagues can support relief efforts is by contributing to the NYSUT Disaster Relief and Scholarship Fund. Visit the “Make A Donation” page at www.nysut.org/DisasterRelief.
The page also has instructions for NYSUT members seeking assistance, and information on how to support NEA’s Disaster Relief Assistance program.
Regents Listen and Respond to Your Advocacy on Opt Out Penalties
Thanks to the advocacy of hundreds of NYSUT members who sent personalized letters to the State Education Department this summer, SED and the Board of Regents have backed down on proposed ESSA regulations that would have unfairly punished school districts where large numbers of students and families opt out of state testing.
